These works were a part of a donation from the Carnegie Corporation which included many books and art historical reference photographs. Most of the books are currently in the Museum library. There is no record as to what occured to the photographs. As of this date they cannot be located at the Museum. See the accession file for 2014A.23G-2014Q.23G for a copy of the 1933 "An Index to the Set of Fine Art Materials" which discusses this grouping of materials. There is a discussion about some of the earliest prints being reproductions. It is unknown if the Museum's prints fall into this category. They should be examined by an expert.
From the Index: "Included in the set are fifteen prints, among which are a few reproductions of the work of such masters as Mantegna, Durer, and Rembrandt, whose originals, even in the familiar late impressions, obviously could not be obtained. Among these fifteen will be found examples of each of the important graphic reproductive processes, and also examples from the more significant historical periods. The study of the prints should also be supplemented by use of the books on the graphic arts."
It should be noted that our sets include more than fifteen prints.
