Description
Though he had been passionate about art since childhood, even studying briefly at the Art Students League in New York, Fremont Ellis did not decide to devote himself to art until visiting Santa Fe where he gained a reputation for his impressionistic depictions of the New Mexican landscape. Ruminating on his first encounter with the landscape in Santa Fe Ellis remarked “my God, this is heaven.” He quit his profession as an optometrist in El Paso, and moved to New Mexico in 1919 and in 1921 became one of Los Cinco Pintores. Out of the other members of the group, Fremont Ellis was said by his daughter to be closest to Will Shuster. Adios Amigo - Hasta la Vista portrays Shuster’s funeral. Having served in the United States Army in World War I Shuster was buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery.
