DescriptionAn abstract landscape of a passing storm. The mountain in the central ground is bathed in golden sunlight. A heavy sheet of rain is falling from a very dark cloud directly in front of the golden mountain. Homes, pastures, and a wooden fence make up the foreground. At the upper right are scattered clouds and patches of clear sky. There is a rainbow and black storm clouds in the left background.Text Entries
Due to existing
damage, instability, and significant condition issues to the original frame for
2179.23P, the Head of Curatorial Affairs, Merry Scully, decided not to send 2179.23P
on loan in its frame. A replacement frame was found that was roughly the same
size, was no longer being used with its original painting (a new frame had been
made to replace the original) and fit the style of this painting. Therefore,
the original frame for the painting The
Springtime Rainbow by Josef Bakos (3098.23P) was used to serve as the frame
for 2179.23P to go out on loan. Both frames included an interior border mat-like
section to outline the work. The interior structure for 2179.23P is an
off-white painted wood panel and 3098.23P is a linen covered panel. During test
fitting to make sure 3098.23P frame would work, it was decided that the painted
interior panel that belongs with 2179.23P fit better than the linen covered
panel from 3098.23P and was thus kept with the painting for the loan. At the
time of reframing 2179.23P into the temporary replacement frame 3098.23P, it
was noticed that there were areas of concern due to active lifting of the
painted and gesso surface away from the support. Preventative conservation was
then completed on frame 3098.23P prior to travel in order to secure lifting
areas of the surface from further detachment during travel and the duration of
the loan. After returning to the museum from loan, 2179.23P was reunited with
its original frame and the original frame for 3098.23P was returned to its
storage location to be kept for its significance as an original frame belonging
to an artwork in the collection. Please see write up and images of the treatment
procedure in the accession file.
