This painting appeared as an illustration for the article "The Fair in the Cow Country," by W. Hebert Dunton in Scribner's Magazine vol. 55 (April 1914). The caption included for the painting title reads: Phantom shapes of men and animals were shooting from the dust in every direction as though hurled by an explosion.
The title of the illustration from the article is "Phantom shapes of men and animals were shooting from the dust in every direction as though hurled by an explosion." Since this title is a little vague, it was decided to simply title the painting Illustration for The Fair in the Cow Country.
The original cardboard backing was removed from the painting after returning from completion of conservation treatment. The original backing board had a label affixed to it which was removed before it was disposed of. The removed label is now stored in the Accession file.
