eMuseum Notes

The portrait features Laura Gilpin, (1891-1979), a significant figure in the history of photography and an important role model for women photographers in the 1970's. Gilpin lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico from 1946 to 1979, and was a key figure in the photo community. Noggle took this photograph the year before Gilpin's death.

During her time as a Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Noggle worked with photographer William Cift to organize a solo exhibition of Gilpin's work in 1974 that traveled extensively. She included Gilpin in the exhibition and produced the book Women of Photography: An Historical Survey, (1975).
