DescriptionLarge tree with many branches with light green wispy leaves. Blue sky in background through leaves.eMuseum Notes
A large cottonwood near Georgia O’Keeffe’s home in Abiquiu, New Mexico became the subject of numerous paintings depicting the cycles of nature. In Spring Tree No. 1, O’Keeffe focuses on the greening of the tree and the unusual formation of its branches. She reduced detail to emphasize the primary forms and filled the frame with the tree, allowing only glimpses of the landscape beyond.
