Ansel Adams was a photographer and environmentalist known for his striking photographs of the American West, primarily in California, New Mexico and the country’s National Parks. He joined the Sierra Club, an environmental organization dedicated to exploring, enjoying, and protecting the wild places of the earth in 1919 and much of his success as a photographer was tied to the organization. Adams’ first publication and writings appeared in the club’s bulletin and his first solo exhibition was at the club’s headquarters. Through his striking, dramatized photographs of America’s wild places, Adams hoped to illustrate the importance of preserving these areas. His photographs became emblematic of American wilderness and he used them to garner support for the National Park System, and above all, the preservation of wilderness. They also exist as some of the finest records of our national parks before heavy tourism. [stimulated to some extend by his pictures!]
