Sharon (Volunteer) asked me (Rebecca Potance, Librarian) for help in identifying the
meaning of the inscription on the portrait of Teresa Bakos (1989.408.1) in Good
Company that says “For Raph”. I am pretty certain that “Raph” is
short for Raphael. Teresa Bakos had a son named Raphael Dorman with her first
husband Archibald Dorman. Raphael was also married to a woman named Helen
Starbuck, the name of the person who gave us the painting. It seems pretty
obvious to me that Shuster made the portrait of Teresa for her son and that
this wife gave it to us after he died.
