eMuseum Notes
Coburn often used Saint Paul’s Cathedral as the subject of his photographs. Here it is rendered in the Pictorialist style, popular around the turn of the twentieth century, as artists working in photography fought to establish their medium as one of the fine arts. The focus is diffused and the image has the softness of a charcoal drawing (a more accepted art form), while also capturing the gritty, industrial quality of London in the early 1900s.
