Text Entries
Charles Harold Davis was a prominent American Impressionist working on the east coast.  He was a leading figure in the art colony at Mystic, Connecticut, and in 1913, became the founder of the Mystic Art Association. He was known as a prominent Tonalist painter and famous for his cloud and skyscapes. Tonalist artists worked in palettes of dark, subtle, yet expressive color and forms, and they believed that landscapes could evoke emotion and suggest deep cosmic harmonies. Tonalism is a subgenre within nocturne paintings, with the Tonalists focusing on the distinctive colors of dusk and night which are restful on the eyes and inspire serene contemplation.
