The incorrect title, Walking Rain (Pablita Passes) was used as the primary title by MOA since the painting was acquired due to a lack of correct information that has since been discovered. An audio tape in the MOA archives recorded a story told by Bob Ewing, former Curator and Director at MOA. In the recording it clarifiedied that the correct title for the painting is Pablita Passes. Pablita Passes is now the primary title that will be used for the painting.
This scene depicts villagers gathering for discussion in front of an adobe house after hearing the news of the passing of the young Pablita, a local Hispanic girl who had modeled for the artist.
During the installation of the painting for the 2017 exhibition Horizons: People and Place in New Mexican Art one of the labels attached to the back of the frame detached and fell off during transport of the painting from storage to the gallery. This label was already compromised due to old adhesive and was peeling away from the frame prior to moving the work. The remnants of this label are still attached to the frame and the section that fell off is in the accession file.
