DescriptionMan walking alongside bicycle in landscape.eMuseum Notes
Bill Brandt was a British photographer and photojournalist known for his high-contrast black-and-white photographs documenting British society as well as portraits, landscapes, and nudes. He is considered one of Britain’s most important photographers of the twentieth century for his social commentary and the distinctive vision he brought to much of his work, using wide angles, distortions, and high-contrast printing to exaggerate a subject. Here he offers a somewhat bleak portrait of a coal miner wheeling his bicycle home from work.
