DescriptionWoman’s head and shoulders dominate composition. She is wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt with a zipper, open at the neck. Her face is tilted upward and to the left. She gazes directly at viewer and her expression is bland and appraising.eMuseum Notes
Noggle
is known for her self-portraits which were sometimes fanciful and at other
times brutally frank. “People tell me that the photographs of me are
not in any way flattering,” the artist told curator Anne Tucker in 1993. “They
are not meant to be. They are supposed to be real.” In this picture, Noggle
appears to be appraising either herself or the viewer with an objective gaze.
