Throughout his fifty-year career in photography, Carl Chiarenza has redefined landscape composition through his intuitive, in-studio collages of paper and tin. Peace Warrior (Samurai) 500 is part of his series Peace Warriors, which developed out of Chiarenza’s reaction to the United States’s invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the resulting war. The series, like Chiarenza’s entire body of work, is rich and evocative; the remarkably dark photographs, suggesting abstracted forms of warriors, are shadowlike, masterful, and probing.
