DescriptionBlack picture plane with a teardrop of light extending from top center about 1/3 the length of the photograph. Visible within this small light area are parts of walls, sky, and at the bottom of the teardrop of light is a man in dark clothing.eMuseum Notes
In this daring picture, Callahan creates a portrait of his friend, Robert Harold Fine, as a tiny figure being dwarfed by the looming structures around him. Fine was an architect, so buildings did indeed dominate his life. Callahan’s virtuoso handling of a print so starkly black and white is an indicator of his confidence and his mastery of the medium of photography.
