Michael P. BermanAmerican, born 1956

Michael P. Berman was born in New York and studied biology at Colorado College, earning his undergraduate degree in 1979. He subsequently attended the University of Colorado in Boulder (1980) and then earned his M.F.A. in photography from Arizona State University in Tempe (1985). Before beginning his life as an artist, he worked for the Colorado Divison of Wildlife, for a Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project, and as a ranch worker. Berman’s work has been shown frequently throughout the West – Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas – and nationally. His photographic work is in the collections of institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Missouri; the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson. He has published books including the recent volume Gila (Museum of New Mexico Press, 2012) and the series History of the Future with author Charles Bowden from the University of Texas Press that includes Inferno (2006) and Trinity (2009, in which this image is illustrated), all of which we should have for the library; the library collection already includes 480 Plates: Photographs by Michael P. Berman (Lannan Foundation 2010 with essay by Katherine Ware) and Kiowa. (Ware 2013)

In 2008, Berman was awarded a prestigious fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and demand for his work has increased since then. His primary preoccupations continue are human land use and issues of wilderness in the twenty-first century. He sometimes works in a straightforward photographic style, making gelatin silver and pigment prints, but continues his interested in fragmented imagery by using the same negatives to create multi-panel work.

Berman is a longtime resident of the Southwest and lives in Silver City, New Mexico. He is a 2012 recipient of the New Mexico Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts and his work was part of an exhibition of the honorees at the Governor’s Gallery at the state capital (opened September 14, 2012).
