Harry Nadler, a painter and the chairman of the art department at the University of New Mexico, died Wednesday at his home in Albuquerque. He was 60 years old and also had a home in Amagansett, L.I.

He died of cancer, according to Lisa Hansen of the Franz Bader Gallery in Washington. An exhibition of Mr. Nadler's paintings opened at the gallery on Tuesday.

Mr. Nadler received his master's degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1958 and taught painting and drawing there. He also taught at New York University, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, Wesleyan University and, since 1971, the University of New Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Sturges Nadler; his sister, Bernice Greenberg; his mother, and five stepchildren.
