Charles MattoxAmerican, 1910 - 1996

Born in Bronson, Missouri, Mattox studied at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas with Birger Sandzén. He then attended the Kansas City Art Institute until 1931. He went to New York in 1933 and worked on various federal art projects until 1935. including serving as an assistant to Diego Rivera, grinding pigments for the murals at Radio City Music Hall. He took a teaching position at Commonwealth College in Mena, Arkansas in 1934 and then spent a brief time in Santa Fe in 1936. That same year, Mattox moved to Hollywood, California, where he built sets and designed animation equipment.

Mattox moved to San Francisco in 1950 and taught at the California School of Fine Art (San Francisco Art Institute). He then taught at the University of New Mexico from 1967 to 1976.
