Ana Mendieta

American, born Cuba, 1948 - 1985
BiographyIn 1961, Ana Mendieta and her sister were sent to live in the United States as tensions arose between her family and the newly established Fidel Castro regime. This displacement from her homeland and family had a profound impact on the artist and were a major influence upon her work. Separation and detachment from nature are a dominant theme in the artist’s work. While traveling in Mexico, Mendieta learned about Mexican Catholicism and the country’s pre-Columbian history. Those rituals were an inspiration and also found a place in her work.
