BiographyMay Stevens is an American artist who was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1924. She often used her art as a mode of social and political commentary. The paste-up aesthetic of these works can be connected to Stevens’ membership in the Heresies collective that founded and published Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics out of New York from 1977 –1992. Through a combination of handwritten text, quotes and photocopies from books and archives, Stevens’ composite images emphasize the roles women have played in society.
