Jim DineAmerican, born 1935

Jim Dine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1935. Dine is best known for his drawings and works that combine the painted canvas with ordinary objects of personal daily life. When he emerged on the cusp of the 1960s, Dine was linked with the Pop art movement but is now influenced by Dada assemblage, collage techniques, and the Neo-Expressionist trends. His process begins with drawing in every piece that he makes. The next step is more gestural and expressively interprets common images and objects by often incorporating the three-dimensional object to the canvas. His interest lies in the artistic potential of every medium to experiment with themes of self-identity and portraiture.
