Virgil Ortiz is from a family of celebrated artists: his grandmother Laurencita Herrera and mother Seferina Ortiz were both renowned potters. Ortiz carries on the traditional figurative ceramics of the Cochiti Pueblo and has broadened and updated the work with imagery inspired by diverse subjects including tradition, the fashion runway, and science fiction. In addition to working in clay, Ortiz is nationally and internationally recognized for his work in jewelry, fashion, video and film. (Scully, 2017).
