American, born 1944
BiographyThe artist was born Joyce Adduci in Chicago in 1944; she took the last name Neimanas from her first husband. She received her B.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1966 and her M.F.A. in 1969. While there, she studied with Kenneth Josephson. After graduating she taught at SAIC, was eventually appointed full professor, and became chair of the department. Neimanas met the artist Robert Heinecken in the 1970s, when he was a visiting professor in Chicago, and when they became a couple (and eventually married) the two alternated between life in Chicago where she was based and Los Angeles where he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. Neimanas accepted a teaching position at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where she taught for several years. She continues to live and work in Albuquerque.
