Gabriel OrozcoMexican, born 1962

Born in Veracruz, Mexico, the artist was educated at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City (1981-1984) before continuing his education at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (1986-1987). He has worked in sculpture, photography, drawing, video and printmaking and often incorporates objects (skull, ping-pong table) in his artmaking, a practice that the critic Benjamin Buchloch has equated with the readymades of Marcel Duchamp. Some of his work is also interactive, inviting participation by the viewer with the objective of shifting their perception of reality.

The artist has had solo exhibitions at international institutions including the Tate Modern (2011), Centre Pompidou (2010), the Museo Internacional Rufino Tamayo (2001) and in the United States at the Museum of Modern Art (2009), Hirshhorn Museum (2004), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2001), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1999). Principal publications include two by Ann Temkin, Gabriel Orozco (MOMA, 2009) and Photogravity (PMA, 1999); Gabriel Orozco, by Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin Buchloh, and Briony Fer (Museum del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, 2006); Gabriel Orozco by Benjamin Buchloh, and Alma Ruiz (The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2000); Gabriel Orozco: Clinton is Innocent (Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1998). Orozco has participated in the Venice Biennale on three occasions, the Whitney Biennial on two occasions, and showed work at documenta X and XI. He is the recipient of numerous international awards. He and his family divide their time between Paris, New York, and Mexico City when they are not traveling. (Ware 2013)
