Located in S central Arizona on Salt River; originally settled by Charles Hayden (father of former senator of Arizona Carl Hayden); following WW II showed rapid growth. Officially named Tempe about 1879 at suggestion of Darrell Duppa because the area wassimilar to the Vale of Tempe in Greece.
