Description
Located on Elbe river; was Otto I's base for German colonization of Wendish lands; archbishop-princes ruled large area from 968; burned in 1188; joined Schmalkalden League 1531; 20,000 citizens were massacred in Thirty Years' War (1631); damaged in WW II.
