On W bank of Missouri river; site of trading post established by Manuel Lisa 1812; site of Utah-bound Mormon camp 1846-1847; suffered in great blizzard of 1888; declined after panic of 1893, but economy has improved greatly since 1914. BGN 1977 1931 ranked 48th by population in the 1980 census
