Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) first painted in New Mexico during the summer of 1929 while visiting Mabel Dodge Luhan, the organizer of a modernist enclave in Taos. Luhan reported that O’Keeffe exclaimed "This is wonderful. No one told me it was like this."
