eMuseum Notes
Paul Burlin moved to Santa Fe in 1913 and remained for much of the decade, although he maintained contacts in New York City and actively exhibited there. Burlin sketched this watercolor study of an unknown New Mexican community in August 1917 and gave it as a gift to Dr. Edgar Lee Hewett, an archaeologist and the founding director of the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico (now the New Mexico Museum of Art). The museum opened months later in November, so Burlin likely intended it as a gift for the new museum.
