Yvonne Boursault Fairchild was the daughter of George Boursault and Marie Rapp. Marie Rapp was Stieglitz's part‑time secretary at 291 in 1911, beginning when she was eighteen. This photograph was made during the family's visit to Lake George, New York, at the Stieglitz's family compound. During the summer of 1923, Stieglitz made nearly fifty photographs of Yvonne, ppossiblyas an exploration of his idea of the serial portrait that would capture a subject in a succession of images from birth to death.
