eMuseum Notes
James Stovall Morris first visited Santa Fe in the late 1920s, after completing his studies at Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. He sold his first painting to John Sloan, who then helped Morris to study at the Art Students League in New York City. Morris returned to Santa Fe in the 1930s and enrolled with the Federal Art Project. This painting was produced as part of the relief program and depicts the rooftop of the Lensic Theater behind several adobe buildings. The Lensic opened in 1931 as a movie palace and vaudeville stage.
