eMuseum Notes
This study depicts San José de Gracia Church in Las Trampas, New Mexico. Also known as the Church of Santo Tomas Del Rio de Las Trampas, the structure was completed in 1776. Ernest Blumenschein would have visited the church on a short drive from Taos on the so-called High Road to Taos. The absence of one of the two towers suggests Blumenschein visited during one of the many restorations of the roof. In 1932, the Society for the Preservation of New Mexico Mission Churches restored the roof under the direction of architect John Gaw Meem, a colleague of Blumenschein's.
