Known for her direct and compassionate portraiture, Mary Ellen Mark has traveled all over the world making pictures. Trained as a photojournalist, she often seeks out difficult aspects of the human condition -- including homelessness, mental illness, drug addiction, and prostitution -- finding commonality with her subjects rather than portraying them as exotic strangers. This picture of schoolchildren in Sydney, Australia, was made for a National Geographic assignment about immigration.
