DescriptionTwo figures seated on table in studio, bearded man in profile at left and nude woman with back to camera at right; room has windows, slanted chessboard is underneath table.eMuseum Notes
In this series of work from the late 1980s, the artist uses himself and studio in cryptic compositions that seem to be about the relationship of artist to model and of man to woman. The slanting planes, empty frame, and averted eyes in this picture suggest unease, though everything appears to be in order on the surface of things. The chess set and model’s back are references to Lazorik’s artistic ancestors, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray.
