DescriptionFrontal view of human skull with pattern of squares drawn on it in graphite.eMuseum Notes
This photograph presents a view of Orozco’s sculpture Black Kites (graphite on human skull), created in 1997 for the contemporary art festival Documenta X in Kassel, Germany. The organic irregularities of the human skull contrasts with the precise, geometric form imposed upon it by the artist. The obvious wear and yellowing of the skull – having survived a lifetime of use by its inhabitant – also contrasts with the black regularity of the grid the artist attempts to apply over its uneven surface.
