eMuseum Notes
In 1968 Frederick Hammersley took an Art1 class at the University of New Mexico. Written in the computer programming language Fortron, Art1 was one of the first computer programs designed for visual artists. Using computer punch cards, an IBM 360/40 computer, and an IBM 1403 line printer as his tools, Hammersley made what he dubbed “computer drawings.” The IBM 1403 could print only capital letters, numerals, punctuation, and a few symbols.
