Lions Head Mountain, located to the south of Denver, Colorado, is shown in the distance of this painting. Artist Jozef Bakos had been teaching at the University of Colorado, Boulder, but he likely painted this scene when the university was closed in 1920 by an epidemic of influenza. Bakos would have hiked to record this view, and hiking would continue to be part of his practice upon his relocation to Santa Fe later in 1920. In Lionhead Mountain, Colorado, Bakos used expressive brushwork and a naturalistic palette to capture his impression of the scene.
