Emuseum Notes

Giacometti (1902-1985) was an artist and designer in his own right as well as the brother of sculptor Alberto Giacometti. The two had a close relationship and shared a studio in Paris, making Diego readily available in the role of model. Alberto made many sculpture busts of Diego in the early 1950s. The jacketed shoulders of this example forms a dense and heavily worked base that is largely edited out by the photographer, who concentrates on the almost geologic surface of the head. The protrusion of Diego’s nose, lips, and chin on one side are mirrored by the jagged shapes of his hair on the other side.
