eMuseum Notes
Chinese artist Yao Lu's series “New Landscapes Part 1” expresses his concern about the impact of China’s rapid urbanization and industrialization. Lu underscores the tensions between traditional and contemporary Chinese values by borrowing the formats and styles of ancient Chinese painting and then working digitally to create new scenes populated by small figures. What appear at first glance to be scenic mountains are instead enlarged construction sites covered in green netting. The environmental and cultural message is applicable globally, raising questions about the hidden costs of accelerated development and change.
