DescriptionClose, vertical view of rock formations against sky. At center foreground, a dark, weathered formation of stone rises to the top of the page.eMuseum Notes
The distinctive rock formations at Arches National Park north of Moab, Utah, are an irresistible subject for tourists and landscape photographers alike. Artist Paul Reinwald chose black-and-white film for his image of Pine Tree Arch to emphasize the form and mass of this natural structure. Rather than showing the scenic view through the center of the arch, he chose a vantage point to the side, situating the more eroded arm of the landform prominently at the center of the picture. Reinwald’s unusual view contrasts the muscular torque of this form with the more stolid one behind it, resulting in a dynamic composition.
