DescriptionBlack shadow of a cross on snow dominates the composition with small animal footprints at right.eMuseum Notes
Dominating this composition is the looming shadow of a cross, two intersecting lines with a strong spiritual connotation. The artist captures tiny footprints in the snow to in contrast to the bold, black form, a charming grace note to what could be a meditation on life and death, endurance and ephemerality. The image was made at Ghost Ranch, in northern New Mexico, situated beneath the visually striking cliffs of the Piedra Lumbre. This storied place was, for a time, home to artist Georgia O'Keeffe, whose writings about it inspired Scheinbaum and photographer Janet Russek to spend time photographing it, resulting in the series and book "Ghost Ranch: Land of Light."
