eMuseum Notes

El Llanito is a village near Bernalillo, New Mexico, where Lyon and his wife built an adobe house in the early 1970s. During that first decade, Lyon often photographed and filmed the children growing up there. His first film in New Mexico was also titled “Llanito” (1971) and included twelve-year-old Danny Jaramillo who became one of Lyon’s main subjects.

This image juxtaposes the lack of economic and social resources against a backdrop of picturesque mountains, a stark image of co-existing realities in many New Mexico neighborhoods. But it also captures the freedom of time alone with nothing particular to do except shoot baskets in your yard.
