Kay WalkingStick produced this painting as part of a larger series that she worked on over the course of a year between 1979 and 1980. At first intended to exist as maquettes for a larger painting, the smaller works were formatted using a square grid, that would often contain two arcs and a line. Acrylic and wax were applied to the surface, and once dry, WalkingStick would add dry pastel, oil pastel, or graphite. Works from this series mark the culmination of her early career and are some of the first works in which she explored her Indigenous heritage while responding to the abstraction happening around her in New York at the time.
