DescriptionHorizontal still life composition on what appears to be a wooden table running width of page. At center is a woven basket with at least four oranges, including leaves and blossoms at top. To the right is a metal pitcher or watering can with cylindrical spout. At left is a whole lemon and a sliced lemon on a small place, revealing black fruit and seeds inside the sliced lemon. Deep grey background with lighter tones toward middle of page.eMuseum Notes
Artist Jo Whaley considers this image a transition or bridge piece in her work, in that it combines the physical objects of a studio still life with elements from the natural world (such as the flower and leaves and live snails from her garden). The magnifying glass and chrome equipment, along with the Luna Moth specimen, signify an analytical, scientific approach to knowledge of the world versus an earthier, more experiential approach indicated by the snails exploring the table and flower, both of which enrich our understanding in different ways.
