DescriptionLandscape of the rocks and cliffs of Bandelier National Monument painted using shades of black.eMuseum Notes
For nearly 38 years, Karen Gunderson has explored the expressive possibilities of black, using only four shades of paint to create richly textured surfaces that shift with changing light. Her monocromatic depiction of Bandelier National Monument transforms its volcanic cliffs into a study of light, shadow, and form, honoring the ancient Ancestral Puebloan dwellings carved into the landscape nearly a thousand years ago.
