After studying lithography at San Francisco State University in 1960, Lowney served in the Army until 1964 and upon his return moved to New Mexico in 1967 to work at Tamarind, where master printer Garo Antreasian became a mentor and friend. His prints and paintings combine quiet wit and dreamlike, surreal imagery, often reflecting the expansive skies, natural beauty, and contemplative landscape of the American Southwest.
