Artist Walter Mruk spent much of the 1920s working in Santa Fe but, by the end of the decade, he left New Mexico to return to his birthplace, Buffalo, New York. The date of 1938 on this watercolor, if accurate, suggests that Mruk either returned to visit Santa Fe or painted this scene from memory or earlier sketches. Given the character of the rendering, the watercolor seems to have been painted en plein air. Mruk captured the adobe buildings, farmland, and desert foliage with an economy of brushwork.
