During the early years of Cady Wells's career, he experimented with a variety of approaches under the tutelage of his mentor, Andrew Dasburg. Dasburg's work rarely exhibited the exuberance and improvisation apparent in Well's Flowering Tree, however. Wells took clear delight in his depiction of the blossoms and the winds circulating around the tree, indicated by a series of staccato marks surrounding the tree. Those references to unseen forces may have been the additional influence of John Marin, who had visited Taos in 1929 and 1930.
