Victor Higgins first visited Taos, New Mexico in 1914, which was an active though small artist colony. Higgins would relocate there in 1915 and join the exhibition group the Taos Society of Artists (TSA) that same year. Higgins befriended the more conservative artists of the TSA, as well as the modernists from New York City. He would become close friends with Mabel Dodge Luhan and Andrew Dasburg.
In the early years of his residency, Higgins scoured the countryside, painting small en plein air sketch such as this one.
