DescriptionBack of San Francisco de Asis church in Ranchos de Taos with a red background and black buttress.eMuseum Notes
The rear of the Ranchos de Taos church was made iconic by many modernists, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Paul Strand, and John Marin, who created work celebrating the impressive adobe structure. This piece is part of a series of paintings by Harold Joe Waldrum depicting rural churches in northern New Mexico with flattened forms and complementary colors. The scale, flatness, and colors monumentalize the structure while pushing the composition to near abstraction. The painting works as a representation of architecture as well as an abstract relationship of shape, color, and form.
